Marie Cobian has been with the City of Los Angeles Planning Department for over 17 years. She is the Senior City Planner overseeing the recently created Health & Environmental Justice Unit in the Department’s citywide policy division. Prior to her current assignment, she worked on land use planning at the community level for the South LA and Harbor geographies - areas that face many environmental challenges. The Plan addressed long-standing issues related to environmental justice, incompatible land use patterns and the inequitable distribution of goods and services.
Prior to joining the City of Los Angeles, Marie worked for the City of Bell Gardens Planning Department for almost 3 years. Before embarking on her career in public service, she worked for non-profit, community organizations that were dedicated to improving the lives of Latinos\as and other underrepresented communities through voter education and public policy research and advocacy. Marie holds a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from the University of California Los Angeles and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from California State University Los Angeles.
