An Equity and Parks Success Story:
Park Renewal and Reinvestment in Fresno 2:45 PM-3:45 PM
Fresno has become an unexpected model for equitably funding parks, arts and culture, and youth programs. In 2019 residents passed the landmark initiative Measure P to fund park capital improvements, ongoing maintenance, and programs. It earmarks dollars to “highest need communities” based on fixed criteria. This data driven approach ensures the will of the voters is implemented as an annual average of 36 million new dollars is directed toward restoring dilapidated parks and preparing for a new climate future. Join us to meet the champions of the initiative who advocate for underserved and underrepresented communities, and the planners who develop the park policy framework and assist the City and Oversight Commission to implement Measure P.

Environmental Justice Planning, Policy,
and Organizing in California 2:45 PM-3:45 PM
Urban planning has not always had an easy relationship with environmental justice. A history of poor planning decisions and discrimination, for example, have led to disproportionate environmental harm in low-income communities and communities of color. Since the 1980s, activists in California have pushed for regulatory support for changes to how we plan communities. Nevertheless, much more information and discussions are needed for planners to better understand environmental justice as it relates to community engagement and land-use policy. The presentations in this session will shed light on the challenges planners face in relation to environmental justice policy, community engagement, and carrying out nascent policies such as SB 1000.
